Alkaline diet

The human body has an amazing ability to maintain a steady pH in the blood. Many of the membranes in our body require an acid pH to protect us and to help us digest food. A diet high in acid-producing foods leads to metabolic imbalance, promoting mineral loss and illness as the body tries to restore equilibrium, thus, an alkaline diet may prevent a number of diseases and result in significant health benefits. In general, meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, caffeine, sugar, and salt are the most acid forming, while fruits and vegetables are the most alkaline forming (mainly due to protein and mineral content). Grains are slightly acid forming, and legumes vary by type.

Why is this important?

When we indulge in an excess of acid-forming foods, the body works harder to neutralize the pH, mainly by releasing alkalizing minerals into the blood to buffer the acid ,

When diet is low in critical minerals, most of the minerals are drawn from the bones, therefore, alkaline-forming foods (fruits and vegetables especially) have a positive effect on bone retention.

Increased fruits and vegetables in an alkaline diet would improve the K/Na ratio and may benefit bone health, reduce muscle wasting, as well as mitigate other chronic diseases such as hypertension and strokes.

The resultant increase in growth hormone with an alkaline diet may improve many outcomes from cardiovascular health to memory and cognition.

An increase in intracellular magnesium, which is required for the function of many enzyme systems, is another added benefit of the alkaline diet. Available magnesium, which is required to activate vitamin D, would result in numerous added benefits in the vitamin D apocrine/exocrine systems.

Alkalinity may result in added benefit for some chemotherapeutic agents that require a higher pH.

Studies have found a positive effect of alkaline diets on muscle retention as people age. Proteins are not necessarily a major contributor to acid load, in fact it helps the body excrete acid. However, they type of protein is also important, animal protein contains more sulfur which contributes to acid load, thus, plant protein is more protective.
